This project investigates the intersection of movement, endurance, and transformation through the cyanotype printing method. By combining the ephemeral nature of performance with the tangible imprints of cyanotype, this work captures the physical and emotional toll of artistry.
An aerial hoop, wrapped in fabric coated with cyanotype chemistry, becomes both a tool and a canvas. As Nesh performs, her movements expose specific areas to UV light, imprinting patterns that reflect the parts of her body that endure the most strain. Over time, these marks darken, paralleling the desensitization performers often develop to pain—an invisible sacrifice to make their craft appear graceful and effortless. The evolving patterns not only document the intensity of her labor but also serve as a metaphor for the invisible scars carried by those who push their bodies to the limit in pursuit of beauty and perfection.
The unpredictable conditions of nature—cloudy skies, shifting UV levels—add another layer of vulnerability and spontaneity, echoing the inherent uncertainty and adaptability required in performance. Filmed in Lian, Batangas, this work intertwines the artist’s body, the environment, and time, emphasizing how art is imprinted not just on the material but also on the self.
